Craniosacral Therapy Surrey Fleetwood & Guildford RMT
A gentle, light-touch approach to support Nervous System Regulation, Ease Physical Tension, and Promote Deep Relaxation.
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
When you live with persistent pain, chronic headaches, or constant fatigue, your body can feel like it is locked in an exhausting loop: you may be completely exhausted, yet your system is too revved up to let you rest.
Few structures influence your body's ability to function and move as deeply as your brain and spinal cord. The central nervous system is closely supported by the craniosacral system—the protective membranes and fluid that surround, cushion, and nourish it.
Every day, your body absorbs and adapts to various physical stresses and repetitive strains. Over time, these cumulative demands can contribute to tightening of the surrounding connective tissues, placing structural tension on this delicate system.
When these tissues tighten, they can create physical restrictions around your spinal cord and head. Because your nervous system controls and coordinates nearly every other system in your body, these localized physical restrictions can act as a barrier to your body’s natural performance.
If you are suffering from chronic pain conditions, migraines, recovering from a concussion or feel a general "wired and tired" state of burnout, deep-tissue massage can sometimes feel like "too much" for your body. Instead of relieving pain, heavy pressure can trigger defensive muscle guarding, sensory overload triggering nociceptive reflex arc (pain-spasm cycle), or post-treatment flares.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) offers a different pathway to relief. Rather than pushing through your body's defenses, this ultra-gentle therapy—originating from osteopathic medicine—works with your nervous system to help reset your physical baseline.
By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord through gentle touch we enhance the body’s ability to self-correct and create conditions to allow your body to finally start to transition from protection to recovery.

A Nervous System Focused Approach to Physical Bracing
Whether from an old physical injury, chronic postural strain, or prolonged stress, the body can retain persistent physical patterns of tension.
When your system perceives a physical threat or strain, it triggers a reflex called neuromuscular guarding—bracing and tightening the fascia around your spine, head, and the transverse physical diaphragms (the pelvic floor, respiratory system, and thoracic inlet/collarbone area) that support your entire structural alignment.
When physical stress or pain is persistent, your nervous system can get stuck in this defensive bracing pattern. Your body defaults to a state of chronic holding, leaving you feeling physically tight, fatigued, and highly sensitive to discomfort. Our patient-led, nervous-system-focused approach respects your body's physical boundaries.
By using a precise, non-invasive, and incredibly gentle touch, we communicate directly with your skin and fascial sensory receptors. This safe, predictable contact signals to your brain that it is safe to downshift, helping those deep, protective guarding patterns to naturally unwind and release.

Vagus Nerve Support & Autonomic Balance
A Note On Your Care: This list represents common structural holding patterns that may respond to CranioSacral Therapy, helping to support your body’s natural alignment and nervous system wellness. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and that manual therapy is designed to be supportive and complementary to your overall health plan. Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) do not diagnose medical conditions; we always advise speaking with a qualified medical professional for any acute, unexplained, or underlying medical concerns.
How an Ultra-Gentle Touch Adresses "Structural Guarding"
Your muscles and fascia are packed with tiny tension-sensors called proprioceptors. When met with heavy physical force, these sensors perceive the stretch as a threat and reflexively contract. Pushing through this guarding only causes your body to fight back.
To release this bracing, we work directly with your body's natural reflexes:
-
Working with the "Direction of Ease": Instead of fighting tight tissues, we use a light touch (about the weight of a nickel) to follow the path of least resistance—gently guiding the tissue in the direction it wants to move.
-
The Neurological Reset: By supporting the tissue in its most comfortable, stress-free position, we temporarily "slacken" those sensitive tension sensors.
-
Melting the Guard: Once these sensors stop sending alarm signals to the brain, your central nervous system safely downshifts, allowing deep, chronic protective tension to finally release.

What To Expect In A CranioSacral Session
Assessment, Alignment & Reset
1. The Postural Scan & Assessment: The First session begins with a history and palpation to establish a clear, objective baseline for your treatment. (frequently measured around 5 grams, or the weight of a nickel), the manual assessment tracks the amplitude, symmetry, and quality of the craniosacral pulse at key structural hubs
2. Finding Comfort on the Table: You remain fully clothed. Once you recline comfortably on the treatment table in a quiet setting, your RMT ensures your spine and limbs are fully supported with pillows and bolsters so you can settle.
3. Gentle Physical Release: Using precise, feather-light contact - 5 grams of pressure (the weight of a nickel), we evaluate the subtle rhythm of the fluids and membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. Gently cradling areas like the head, spine, or tailbone. At times your practitioner may also support your limbs and spine while helping your body release accumulated physical restrictions in the connective tissues (fascia).
The CranioSacral Experience: What a Nervous System Reset May Feel Like
As these physical restrictions are gently supported, your central nervous system is given the safety it needs to transition out of "fight-or-flight" and into a deeply restorative, self-regulating state.
Many folks describe this physical transition as a deeply Medatative, peaceful internal process—a feeling of being comfortably "floaty" or drifting in a dreamlike state of relaxation.
Because every nervous system carries its own unique history, each individual's experience and every subsequent session is entirely dependent on what your body needs in that exact moment. One appointment might bring deep, quiet physical stillness, while the next might involve a more active physical or emotional release as an old structural restriction pattern finally completes.
There is no single "right" way to process a treatment; your body simply guides the pace of its own recovery.
Because the mind and body function as an interconnected system, this physical reset can sometimes manifest as a SomatoEmotional Release (SER).
-
The Autonomous Switch: Rather than an adverse reaction, an emotional release is often the initial shift that triggers a physical completion. When the nervous system feels safe enough to let go of an old, held stress pattern, a brief wave of emotion or quiet awareness may arise first, acting as the biological catalyst that allows the physical tissues to fully soften and release.
-
Our Focus: As RMTs, we respect this natural physiological process. Our role is strictly to provide a safe, neutral, and supportive physical presence, allowing your body’s self-regulating mechanisms to do their work. We do not analyze, guide, or psychologically process these emotional waves with you.
-
Collaborative Care: Because your overall well-being is our priority, we love working alongside other healthcare professionals. If a session triggers a completion cycle that brings up deeper emotional themes you would like to actively explore, we highly recommend partnering with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). This ensures you are supported holistically by the right professional at every step.

Post-Treatment Care: How to Integrate Your CST Session
A CranioSacral Therapy (CST) session doesn't end when you get off the table. Because this work addresses deep structural tension, your body will continue to process, adapt, and self-correct over the next 24 to 48 hours.
To give your nervous system the ideal environment to integrate these physical shifts, we recommend a few gentle practices post-treatment:
-
Protect Your Sensory Space: Buffer your time after a session. Avoid rushing straight into high-stress environments, heavy traffic, or intense screen time.
-
Prioritize Gentle Movement: A quiet walk or light stretching helps your body adjust to its new structural alignment without its old "bracing patterns."
-
Honor Your System's Needs: You may feel an immediate wave of energy, or a profound need to sleep. Listen to your body and allow it to dictate the pace of your recovery.
